9 Things You MUST KNOW Before Getting a Shih Tzu

Spread the love

When I brought Bello home, I had no clue about raising a Shih Tzu—or any dog, for that matter. Now, after two years, there are so many things I wish I knew beforehand. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of nine crucial things you must know before getting a Shih Tzu.

1. Get a Shih Tzu from a Breeder: While adoption is commendable, if you decide to purchase a Shih Tzu, ensure you get one from a reputable breeder. Ask questions about the breed’s authenticity and inquire about any potential genetic diseases. A health certificate and a written guarantee can provide additional assurance.

2. They Crave People: Shih Tzus are incredibly social and affectionate. They thrive on human interaction and demand constant love and attention. Be prepared for a furry companion who wants to be by your side all day long.

3. High Maintenance: Shih Tzus have stunning, long fur that requires regular grooming and high-quality products. Be ready to invest time and money into maintaining their coat to keep it shiny and tangle-free.

4. Quality Food Only: Invest in high-quality food for your Shih Tzu, especially while they’re growing. Avoid cheap, filler-filled options and opt for a diet that meets their specific nutritional needs.

5. Stubbornness: Despite their adorable appearance, Shih Tzus can be stubborn, making training a bit challenging. Patience and consistency are key when teaching them commands and behaviors.

6. Bark A Lot: Shih Tzus are vocal little dogs and will bark at various stimuli. While this makes them excellent watchdogs, it’s essential to address excessive barking through training.

7. Heat Sensitivity: Due to their small faces, Shih Tzus can struggle in intense heat and may be prone to heatstroke. Keep them indoors during hot weather and ensure they have access to shade and water.

8. Not Ideal for Toddlers: While Shih Tzus generally get along well with children, their small size makes them susceptible to accidental injury, especially around toddlers.

9. Prone to Coprophagia: Like many dogs, Shih Tzus may indulge in coprophagia—eating feces. Prevent this behavior by closely supervising them and promptly cleaning up after them.

By understanding these nine essential aspects of Shih Tzu ownership, you’ll be better prepared to care for and enjoy your new furry friend. Don’t forget to drop a like and subscribe to our channel for more pet-related content. See you next time!
